How To Write A Podcast Script

Every copywriter should know how to write a fabulous podcast script in 2025. Here are five tips on how to do just that.

Copywriters were always aware of an impending audio/visual overtake. We knew that consumers were turning their attention away from what they read to what they saw and heard. It’s just like books going up against film and music. Books can be spellingbinding works of art but they are an endeavour, a practice, a skill.

Conversely, film and music can wash over us with ease, without our need to put in any effort at all to understand its creative wonder. This meant that complacent copywriters would be left behind to write their blogs and web copy whilst upskilling writers would turn their attention towards coveted script content.

Here are five tips on how to write a podcast script that your audience actually wants to hear:

1. Set your podcast’s objectives

The first tip for podcast script writers is to set the series objective. This means having your topic at the root centre of everything you write. Next, you have to know how you want to present the information to your listeners, something that ties into your digital branding and what your audience wants to hear.

Who is your audience and what kind of content will they love and want to listen to on a regular basis? Once you have your topic, tone and audience you can continue your episode planning.

2. Annotate your titles

Podcast script writers are typically enlisted to write for a series. Therefore, you might have plenty of ideas you want to write. Unfortunately, we often forget to clearly annotate our ideas and titles, thus potentially putting an end to a whole episode before you have the chance to flesh it out on the microphone.

Therefore, it’s imperative that you annotate your ideas and titles, as you might have an episode idea when you are away from your laptop and the only way you can annotate it is through your phone’s note section. Be sure to provide a little more content to the idea so that when you come back to it you remember exactly what is the episode topic and what you want to say.

3. Write how you talk

Because people are going to be listening and they don’t want to listen to someone who speaks like ChatGPT wrote their script. There is nothing more off-putting in the audio content world than dry and dull speakers. They have the ability to make us zone out without listening to another word for the next 28 or however many minutes.

Therefore, just like any digital content, you have to inject some serious personality into your product. If you’re a clever conversationalist who thrives in social environments then take your speaking style to the question of how to write an episode script. The writing process is far more enjoyable when you write as you speak and you will have a much better time reading it, too.

4. Use segues to switch topics

Pretend you were making an episode on how to write a script. You have just informed your listeners of the first tip about setting your series objective. Now, you want to tell them about the importance of annotating their ideas and titles, you’re not simply going to drop what you were saying and suddenly announce “NUMBER TWO: ANNOTATE YOUR IDEAS & TITLES”.

This sounds robotic and incredibly off-putting to the listener. Instead, you should segue between topics, with simple phrases like “once you have set your objective you then need to annotate your ideas”. This invites your listener to follow the flow of conversation without creating an unpleasant listening experience.

5. Make your points

But don’t be afraid to keep it spontaneous. They should always have an element of spontaneity because this creates a casual listening experience and one your audience would likely connect with on a deeper level. Customers want to feel closer to brands and providing spontaneity in your audio/visual content is another way to make you all the more human.

Remember to finish off your episode with all the essential CTAs and you will know exactly how to write a podcast.
